I am posting this photograph because I like it. And because I like photography. And because I like Johnny Cash. And because the photographer, Jim Marshall, has died. I called a few of his books from the stacks of the library and found the images more and more compelling. He is one of those photographers that turned the ordinary iconic. Every page I turned I said, he did that too and that and that. Hendrix rehearsing before Monterey Pop, young Dylan rolling a tire in the Village, the Beatles walking across the infield dirt at Candlestick Park, Janis Joplin reclining backstage at Winterland cradling a bottle of Southern Comfort, Skip James doffing his hat at Newport Folk. He shot everyone, and he truly captured it. Supposedly, Marshall suggested to Cash that he take a picture for the warden.

A Communist era Romanian Orfeus bass. I am considering a similar looking bass currently. I am enamored with the finish, art deco with a weathered patina. To be sure though, the neck on these is reportedly thin and brittle.

I like this Diana Walker portrait of Steve Jobs as a young man living single. I have been thinking about how I’d like to live alone lately. I haven’t for years. This is simple inspiration.
